To break it down a bit more… when a user visits your WordPress site, they are redirected to your web host’s server, such as GoDaddy or HostGator among many others. If your site experiences a high level of traffic, it can overload that server and slow loading time. This is where a CDN, a superhero of sorts, comes in. Because a CDN has servers set up throughout the world, when you use a CDN, your site visitors are redirected to the closest server to their location, not the location of your web host’s server. For example, if your web host’s server is located in Boston, MA and a user in Rome, Italy tries to access your site, they will be redirected to the closest server to Rome, not Boston. This reduces the number of “hops” needed to transmit the static files to the user.
Why Your WordPress Site Needs a CDN
CDNs are great for WordPress sites because much of the post content is static and can easily be cached and served by a CDN. With visitors receiving cached content from the closest CDN data center, origin server load decreases, allowing sites to load faster for your visitors. At the same time, serving a site from multiple data centers makes the origin server more robust. A fortuitous spike in traffic won’t take a site down as the data centers handle the increased load.
Lastly, search engines prefer fast load times, known as time to first byte. With a CDN which caches as much content on the edge—the data centers—as possible, search engines will get that first byte in the fastest way possible, possibly improving search engine rankings. All of these factors make for a much better user experience for your visitors.
How SiteLock TrueSpeed Works
SiteLock TrueSpeed caches static content from websites as all CDNs do. TrueSpeed extends the function of traditional CDNs by utilizing Intelligent Dynamic Caching. Intelligent Dynamic Caching monitors a site’s dynamic content, like that from a WordPress site, and determines how the content is served. Some dynamic content may rarely change which allows TrueSpeed to continue to serve the unchanged content. Other content may change often and intelligent caching will detect and cache the changes to serve visitors the latest dynamic content in the quickest manner possible. TrueSpeed is robust and includes 28 POPs located throughout the world with over 2TBs bandwidth.
